Did You Know???

Dog and cat foods labeled “Weight Management Formula”, “For Weight Loss”, “Weight Control”, “Healthy Weight” and “Light” are not all created equally.

The only standards established for "over the counter" foods is in the “Light” label. The other claims have no caloric standard which must be met. So, when looking for a food to help your obesity prone dog from gaining weight, choose a “Light” version. However, if your pet is already overweight, an even more strictly reduced diet should be considered which can only be found in prescription type foods.

Only canned varieties of pet food can be preservative free.

Any kibble MUST contain some sort of preservative (even if natural ones) to maintain the shelf life of the food.

“No added preservatives” does not mean “preservative free.”

The claim “no added preservatives” means only that the pet food company itself did not add any preservatives. It does NOT mean that the processors that handled the food prior to the pet food company did not add any preservatives.

Switching to a “sensitive skin” variety of food will not cure skin allergies.

A food allergy is only one of a few different types of skin allergies. The allergy is developed against specific proteins in the pet’s food. Any protein can be the culprit, even the most expensive purest organic variety. The only way to avoid the allergy is by strictly restricting the offending protein from the pet’s food and offering an entirely different type of protein. These specialty foods are available as prescription varieties only.
